PRISM SOUND GATHERINGS
Prism is the name of my joint business with my partner. Sound gatherings revolve around meditation sessions with live improvised sound that explores vibrational patterns with synthesizers, samplers, and audio effects to create an immersive sound field and an opportunity for participants to get out of the thinking mind state and into the body state of present moment awareness — and beyond that, into the energetic state of oneness with everything.
Gatherings take place in a heated yurt in a beautiful forest setting with space for six participants lying down on mats. The sound is amplified for a full-body vibrational experience, and headphones offer volume control and noise cancellation.
Meditation on its own is profoundly transformational. Most of us know we should be doing it, but we don’t seem to make the time for it. Incorporating regular meditation into our lifestyle reduces stress, improves our health, and helps us develop self-awareness and emotional well-being. See this link for many additional benefits of meditation.
Meditation to music offers even more benefits. See “A Guide to Sound Healing” for some basic information about the benefits of sound healing. Music deeply permeates our bodies, and sound waves can be used to alter our vibrational states, profoundly affecting us on a cellular level, promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and encouraging deep healing.
Sound waves can also help to bring about shifts in perception and consciousness. Sound acts as a framework in the meditation process: a vibrational field that can accentuate mindfulness. Without having to try to clear your mind, the soundscape pulls your awareness into the present moment and helps you slow your brainwaves down to the alpha-wave state, associated with being physically relaxed and mentally focused, activating the parasympathetic nervous system response: the “rest, digest, and heal” state. Further, the sound can help you attune to your energetic being, beyond your mental or physical state.
Sustained notes have long been used as a tool for working with consciousness. When a sound is sustained, the brain is deprived of the cues it normally relies on to keep the world divided into “in here” and “out there.” Over time, the sound stops feeling like an external input and begins to feel like a field you are part of.
Meditation supports this process by minimizing other sensory cues: there is just sound and awareness, and the mind no longer has enough material to keep rebuilding a sense of separation. The sound invites us to step out of the patterns of thought with which we normally identify and into present moment awareness.
Prism uses scientifically precise sound tools in a creative, unscripted, and exploratory way, blending art with science. Synthesizers are precise enough to manipulate sound at the level of the waveform, allowing for a broader and more controlled articulation of sound than most handcrafted sound objects.
Sound meditation in a magical setting with live music and others on the same path is a wonderful way to deepen your practice with a community — or to get you started, or as an introduction to the longer meditative workshops that we offer.
Depending on the weather, sound gatherings are offered two Saturdays per month. You can arrive anytime between 4:00-7:00pm to chat with others, sit by the fire, and experience an hour of sound immersion in the yurt. The suggested donation is $25.
We are available for private sessions as well: for individuals, couples, or groups.
We also offer 90-minute sessions combining sound healing and bodywork for individuals or couples on Sundays.
